New Dragon Fruit Branch on Mature Plants

Sometimes a dragon fruit will find ways to grow. These mature plants still grow new shoots. The brown trunk is almost all core and no green flesh. Not sure if there are thorns underneath the core but it is smooth (maybe due to corking) to the touch.
